We live in a world where it has become much easier to tell your own story. Here at North we often find ourselves asking clients: Are you telling your story?
With all the various social media platforms available, like Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, and YouTube, it’s no longer only the famous and powerful that have a forum to tell their story, now we all do. What you must ask yourself is are you using those platforms, and if so, how do you use them?
North came up with a few tips for how to tell your story, and use it to your advantage!
Tell your story first!
Are you working for a not-for-profit or serving on a board of directors charged with advancing a cause but also fundraising for that cause? Don’t simply set out to ask people for money or time, first tell your story. Engage them. Make them understand why you care about this cause and before you know it you’ll have them engaged! Social media can help share your story with a broader audience, as well as heighten awareness of your cause or organization. Telling your story can convince an audience to invest in your cause!
No one has endless resources, so sometimes it can pay to be creative in how you tell your story. Social media is a great way to get your message out, and a viral message can help spread your story for little to no cost!
Interact with other members of the community, whether on social media or at events. Promoting other organizations, or working with them, can help promote your own story as well. You can donate money to charities that you believe in, or participate in local events as a volunteer. Not only will doing these things make you feel good, but often your participation will allow your story to become part of someone else’s. Also, by participating in community events, you will help raise awareness of your story with a bigger and more diverse audience!
Use Your Contacts!
Sometimes the best way to bring attention to your story is by using contacts to help spread the word! Family and friends will often be more than willing to help out in this area, as will business contacts you’ve built relationships with! Make sure you maintain a good relationship with these contacts; they could prove to be useful again!
Make an Ask!
When you know you have a captive audience, never leave them without making an ask! Whether the ask is for promotion for your event or organization, or help or money for a fundraiser, always make sure to make your ask once you have told your story, and you have them as a captive audience.
We live in a world today where the ability to tell your story, to heighten awareness about your chosen cause, is infinitely more possible than it has been in the past. So tell your story and make no apologies, but most importantly make it viral!
